History of the EmpoweRing
Camden & Co. is a retail jewelry store in Jonesboro, Arkansas. However, we have so much more to offer than bling-blings. We listen, we counsel, we celebrate, and we offer warm shoulders to all friends and customers who enter here. Retail is not just retail at Camden & Co.! "We" consists of my best girlfriends and myself. We call ourselves the "Camden and Co. Divas".
Janice Cranford, Camden & Co.'s manager, was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago. The impact of this disease seems to be endless. A day seldom passes at work when someone doesn't either call Janice or drop by to discuss her own personal battle with cancer. Thankfully, Janice has passed the all important five-year cancer-free mark!
The Camden and Co. Divas felt driven to do something about this horrendous disease. Through a series of spontaneous brainstorming sessions, we designed the "EmpoweRing". The actual birth of the ring was inspired by my jewelry designer friend, Victoria duPont, who passed away in December of 2004 from breast cancer. She created a "circle of skulls" ring which stood for "Memento Mori…Remember We Are Mortal". The thought came to us when we saw the photograph of the 40,000 women who walked in the Race for the Cure in Little Rock, Arkansas. All we could see was a sea of faces, bright eyes, and, of course...pink! We modified Victoria's concept into a circle of oval faces with pink sapphire eyes to embody the "pink" theme of the fight against breast cancer. The band of faces symbolizes a circle of sisters supporting sisters; thus, it being a constant reminder that we are not alone! The name "EmpoweRing" was suggested by one of the Divas. The wording on the card which accompanies the ring was another Divas input. All of us contributed something to the concept.
There are endless style possibilities for the "EmpoweRing". Janice has two sets of pink sapphire eyes representing her sister, who is also a cancer survivor, and herself. Pam Troutt, another friend, lost her mother after decades of battling this disease. Pam bought a ring for each of her sisters with a private message engraved on the inside. A gentleman purchased a diamond and gold ring for his sister as a thank-you for being the primary caregiver during their mother's illness. A birthday club bought silver rings representing their bond with each other and their support for one of their members. A $100.00 donation is given is to the Susan G. Komen Foundation each time a ring is sold.
Our group of friends has been through a spiritual awakening this year which has inspired us to incorporate the Mind-Body-Spirit concept to our "EmpoweRing".
MIND Gregg Braden & Deepak Chopra are two of the many scientists and physicians who are proving, through a variety of studies, the power our thoughts and/or words have on our well-being and health. Our hope is that the band of faces on each ring will encourage the rings' owners to "think the good fight".
BODY There is a study by Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese scientist, proving that positive words touching the surface of water produce fabulous crystalline structures when frozen, and negative words produce an amorphous mess! So, based on his theory, I have engraved on the inside of each ring, at random, a single word of "Peace, Joy, Luck, or Spirit". Thus, by allowing this affirmative word to touch our skin, we with our bodies consisting of two-thirds water, create a positive order of health at an unconscious cellular level.
SPIRIT The power of prayer is amazing! Our hope is that everyone will join us in a prayer of encouragement for the women and men whose lives have been changed or affected by this disease, as well as, for those who are dedicating their lives to eradicating breast cancer. The first Monday of every month at 12 noon CST is the time we have selected for this mass prayer.
This year our goal is to sell 100 rings; thereby, allowing us to donate $10,000 to The Susan G. Komen Foundation. For 2008, our goal is to sell 1000 ring. We are only limited by our expectations!
Thanks to all of you from all of us,
Pam Norton Hyneman & the "Divas", Janice, Deb, Karen, Pam T, Melissa, and Sharon
P.S. Janice Cranford and I would be happy to speak to your next group meeting and bring an assortment of our rings. Whatever the distance, no matter the size of your group, we would love to attend!
